The light at the South Pole has a very strong blue component, particularly during the summer months. I often found a very strong blue cast in the photos that I took using my digital camera, even when the color temperature was set in the "outdoor" setting. While this seemed to detract from the qualities of many color pictures, the red and green color channels provided plenty of good visual information for use in black and white photography. This postcard is one of many examples where I decided to make a black & white image out of the original color digital photo.
I took this photo on my way back from slushies one evening at ARO. Ahhh Slushies... Yum.
It didn't take long to decide to go with a simple border around the photos, rather than take the time to try to create a fancy border with each image. You'll see that already in this postcard. Simple white border with a black matte. This became a standard with the postcard series.
