The sun is up for six months at a time at the South Pole. March 21 is the approximate date of the "sunset", though the actual process of setting lasts for weeks.

The color's a bit wild in this shot after some tweaks in photoshop. I felt a bit guilty about making such eyecandy out of the image... That is, until I finally got my slides developed from the winter. The 35mm image that I took at about the same time is awesome. I'm pretty stoked about it.
