This photo eventually made it to the New York Times, the BBC, CNN's Space Chronicles, and a wide variety of other newspapers and websites after the NSF used it in a press release. Very exciting.

We had been having a series of tremendous aurora shows throughout the beginning of May. Most of these storms seemed to be occuring between about 10am and noon. I happened to be in the phase of my free-cycling sleep schedule to be sleeping during the auroral storms, but Anne agreed to call and wake me up if reports began filtering in about auroras. I bolted out of bed when the phone rang, and started throwing on my ECW gear. The auroras were extraordinary when I got outside, and I shot digital pictures until my camera battery eventually died from the cold.

The ambient temperature outside was around -87°F, with fairly light winds. The light winds made for a fairly pleasant time outside, with my camera freezing before my fingers.
