This photo was also featured in the NSF press release. While it didn't get nearly the coverage of the color aurora image of the new construction, I'm just as happy with it.

The building shown in the image is NOAA's Atmospheric Research Observatory, spoken "ARO" in the native tongue. A rope tied between the flags marks the path to ARO during stormy weather when visibility may drop to a few meters. Getting lost between buildings at the South Pole is a dangerous possibility regarded with grave concern. Thus, the flaglines...

The black and white version of this image looks much smoother than the original, due to a strange crosshatched pattern that seemed to show up occasionally in my digital images. Luckily, the patterns were offset enough between color channels that the combination of each made for a smooth image.
